Your first solo meal in Korea: from the doorway to the bill

Check whether you can dine alone, how much you must order and where to pay.

01

Guest numbers and portions are different

If staff ask your party size, hold up one finger or say ‘한 명이에요.’ At a restaurant focused on sharing dishes, ask whether you can dine alone before sitting down. A single seat or ordering kiosk does not guarantee that every menu item is available to one diner.

Korean wordingMeaning and next question
1인분One portion. Check whether you can order just one.
2인분부터 / 최소 2인분Minimum two portions. Separately ask whether one diner may order two and eat there.
2인 이상 / 2명 이상May require at least two guests. Check with staff.
2인 세트A set designed for two. Confirm solo use and the total price.

Paying for two portions does not guarantee entry. Conditions can vary with the time, menu and restaurant's operation.

02

Start with menus priced by the bowl or plate

A type of food does not guarantee single orders at every restaurant. For dietary restrictions or allergies, ask specifically about meat, seafood, broth and sauces rather than relying on a translated dish name.

ExamplesWhat to ask before ordering
국밥 / 설렁탕Rice soup / beef-bone soup: meat type, offal and whether rice is included.
비빔밥 / 덮밥Bibimbap / rice bowls: meat, egg, sauce and spicy seasoning.
칼국수 / 냉면Knife-cut noodles / cold noodles: broth, temperature and portion size.
김밥 / 분식Gimbap / snack dishes: amount per roll or plate and any minimum quantity.

03

Work out the order, payment and pickup sequence

Look for staff seating, counter ordering, a kiosk or a tabletop tablet. Even with a machine, you may need to sit first and know your table number. Check dine-in or takeaway, dish, quantity, options and total in that order.

Some places take payment first; others after eating. Keep your receipt or order number and check whether to collect your meal or wait for table service. Ask for help with an unfamiliar screen. Reaching the payment page is not the same as completing an order.

04

Follow the signs for water, sides and trays

‘물 셀프’ means self-service water; ‘반찬 셀프’ means collecting side dishes from a designated area. Refills and separately charged dishes are different. Ask before assuming every side is free and unlimited.

After eating, look for ‘퇴식구 / 반납’, meaning a return point. Some restaurants ask you to return trays; others clear the table. Ask the restaurant whether leftovers can be packed to take away.

05

Check quantities and extras when paying

If you have not paid, find the counter and say ‘계산할게요.’ Check quantities and extra orders on the receipt. If an overseas card fails, check authorisation alerts before trying another payment method.

A transit-card or QR symbol does not guarantee acceptance of your own card or app. Have a backup and confirm that payment has completed.

06

Korean sentences to show staff

You can show the sentence instead of pronouncing it. Choose the question that matches the issue: guest numbers, portions, ordering or payment.

I am alone. Can I eat here?혼자 왔어요. 식사할 수 있나요?
Can I dine alone if I order two portions?혼자 2인분을 주문하면 이용할 수 있나요?
I do not understand the order screen. Could you help?주문 화면을 잘 모르겠어요. 도와주실 수 있나요?
The payment failed. Can I pay another way?결제가 안 됐어요. 다른 방법으로 계산할 수 있나요?
Can I take the leftovers away?남은 음식을 포장할 수 있나요?

07

Save a nearby backup

Save your preferred restaurant and one nearby alternative. For your first meal, consider somewhere with an easily confirmed single portion. Check minimum orders before choosing sharing dishes such as barbecue or hotpots.

Read menu and dining conditions in our list, then use Map to see the location. Compare the Korean name and address so you do not go to a different branch with a similar name.
