Separate payment, travel and top-ups
The cost of buying a card and its usable balance are different. A card that works in a shop may not work at a transit top-up machine. Bring a backup payment method and verify that transactions finish successfully.

Choose a transit product for your actual route
The Korea Tourism Organization describes options including Tmoney, EZL, WOWPASS and the Climate Card. Start with whether you will travel between cities or mainly use covered Seoul routes, then compare likely journeys and overall cost.
For stored-value cards, check coverage and top-up locations. For combined visitor payment and transit cards, understand the separate shopping and transit balances. For time-based passes, check excluded lines, activation date and validity. Extra features are only useful if you will use them.

On your first ride, check the direction
- Search a public transport route and note the line number, boarding stop, destination stop and direction.
- Check the platform's destination signs: the same line can have platforms for opposite directions.
- Tap one card rather than your whole wallet.
- Follow that service's boarding and exit tapping instructions and check that the tap succeeds.
- Check your exit number and final walk. With heavy luggage, look at the lift route too.

If a payment or transit tap fails
Before repeating a failed card payment, look for an existing authorisation or charge notification. Ask staff whether you can use another card or cash.
For a low transit balance, ask station staff or a convenience store about a suitable top-up method. If you take a wrong turn, show staff your destination before leaving the station gates. Fewer transfers and a shorter final walk can be worthwhile on a first solo trip.
